Hair extension has come a long way. There are now better quality and very natural looking options in the market and improved application methods. It’s about time you gave them a second chance. Extensions can be one of your hair’s greatest assets, allowing you to rock a variety of different hairstyles without committing to a particular look for too long.
How long do hair extensions last?
TAPE IN HAIR EXTENSIONS (4–8 WEEKS). There is no difference as to what tape is in the extensions — as the name suggests, these hair extensions are actually glued to both sides of your natural hair using weft adhesive tape. They are quite popular because they require no heat and also allow your natural hair to grow easily. Tape In hair extensions will last 4–8 weeks. If properly cared for, you can reapply the same extensions for a fresh look.
FUSION/PRE-BONDED HAIR EXTENSIONS (3–4 MONTHS). Fusion hair extensions or Pre-Bonded hair extensions are attached to the hair roots with a tool that looks similar to a hot glue gun — they attach hair to individual strands of natural hair for a fuller, natural-looking appearance. This type of hair extension usually lasts up to 3 to 4 months, depending on how well you take care of it. This includes how you wash your hair, how often you style with a heater and even using the right hairbrush as these extensions stick to your natural hair roots.
SEW IN HAIR EXTENSIONS (6–8 WEEKS). In order for your hair extensions to be sewn, you must first braid your natural hair into cornrows and then these extensions will be sewn into the braid with a needle and thread. People with thicker hair usually choose to have their hair extensions sewn. Sewing hair extensions are fairly permanent and will last anywhere from 6–8 weeks. It is suggested that the maximum time you should weave is 4 months as it may affect your natural hair growth.
CLIP IN HAIR EXTENSIONS (3–6 MONTHS). In short, clip in hair extensions are the least damaging, easiest to use and least permanent hair extensions. These come in strands that have clips that attach to a base which is very simple to clamp to your natural roots. If you regularly use your clips in hair extensions and care for them properly, they can last between 3–6 months and sometimes even more than a year. But again, as with all hair extensions, this depends on how well you care for them.
MICROLINKS (3–4 MONTHS). Also known as micro beaded hair extensions and micro loops — these hair extensions are applied by taking small sections of natural hair and attaching tiny threads of hair into them. No heat or glue is involved in this method. These microlink extensions will last for 3–4 months depending on how well you handle them. Since these beads are stuck to the roots of your natural hair, it is important to treat them with extra care and use natural products.
