During the winter months, it’s not easy to find a sunny mood. The days are shorter, cooler, and the weather a bit more unpredictable. All in all, it can make anyone feel a bit down. While it’s certainly okay to have sad days and accept our emotions for what they are, most of us, admittedly, feel happier.

There are simple things you can do to improve your mood and feel happier. From the tips below, just try the one you find most comfortable, or the easiest for you.

Good mood outside

Smile or laugh
Even though you may not like it, even if it seems silly, sometimes kicking off the negative is as easy as smiling. Smiling can trick your brain, triggering a chemical reaction that can actually boost your mood instantly.

Do something nice for others
Whether it’s taking someone’s dog for a walk, or giving someone a book you no longer need, small acts of kindness can go a long way and will help you feel more positive.

Listen to uplifting music.
Music can have a strong effect on moods. Try creating a playlist of songs that always makes you want to tap your toes or sing along, and turn on whenever you need a happy hit.

Get out of Your routine
Sometimes we fall into sadness because we are simply bored or stuck in a rut. At least once a week, do something out of the box or try something new. Find a new restaurant, explore another city, watch the sun go down, or even take a new route home. Whatever you are doing, just do it differently!

Walked to the window and looked into the light.
Do you work inside all day? Exposure to natural light during the day (especially in the morning) is essential for keeping your body’s rhythm in sync and regulating sleep, metabolism and mood. Windows at work have been linked to increased well-being. If you don’t have an office with windows, go into someone else’s. This will keep you away from emails that frustrate/annoy/disappoint.

Make sure you sleep enough
Most of us need around eight hours of sleep a night to repair and renew our bodies, so make sure you get these if you want to wake up feeling refreshed and energized!

Love for animals
Dogs, cats, bunnies, whatever your pet of choice, take a few minutes to love your pet. Petting animals reduces stress and just makes you feel better! After all, what saddens you when your pet smiles at you?

Buy something fun
Laughter can actually be the best medicine. Grab a board game to play, a silly little figurine or a DVD of your favorite comedian.
Have you ever used any of these techniques to elevate your mood? What has worked the most for you? Or you have tips and tricks of your own?
