Plenty of things cause your skin to age. Some things you cannot do anything about; others you can influence.

Thing that you cannot change is the natural aging process. It have a key element role. With time, you all get visible lines on your face. It is normal for your face to lose some of its youthful fullness. You notice your skin becoming thinner and drier. Your genes largely control when these changes occur. The medical term for this type of aging is “intrinsic aging”.

You can influence another type of aging that affects our skin. Our environment and lifestyle choices can cause

your skin to age prematurely. The medical term for this type of aging is “extrinsic aging.” By taking some preventive actions, you can slow the impacts that this kind of aging has on your skin.

From a molecular standpoint, the human body is full of telomeres, or sections of DNA protein structures at the end of chromosomes. Telomeres help preserve the genetic information that keeps you looking young and spry. Some of the telomere is lost when each cell divides, although an enzyme called telomerase helps replenish this. Time by time, the telomeres will shorten with age and expose the DNA to damage and eventually die off.

This process is called as intrinsic ageing (sometimes called chronological aging). It’s unique to every person since it’s entirely tied to your genetics.

But, certain environmental and behavioral aspects can accelerate the telomere shortening process that makes your DNA more prone to damage. This is known as extrinsic aging.

As a result, premature aging can set in long before it was expected. In other words, human’s biological clock is more advanced than the chronological clock. Controllable aspects such as stress, smoking and sun exposure can all play a role in expediting extrinsic aging.

Thus, it is necessary to optimally maintain your skin healthy, spesifically from premature skin aging. As the name suggests, premature skin aging starts showing its signs even before old age. The symptoms include facial wrinkles, fine lines and black spots. Here are factors that accelerate your skin aging:

  1. Too much sun exposure: Excessive sun exposure can cause the show up of wrinkles and fine lines on your face regardless of age. However, it can be avoided by using sunscreen to your skin when you plan on going outdoors. The ideal sunscreen is one that has an SPF level of 25 and above.
  2. Sleeping position: Sleeping postures have an important role in skin fatigue. Sleeping sideways, while might feel comfortable, has the potential to damage the skin. This is because the cheek has to support the entire head weight, and the pressure can trigger wrinkles or fine lines. Try changing sleeping position more often to minimize damage to one side of the face.
  3. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption: A number of research have indicates that smoking is related with premature aging, specifically facial wrinkles. Habitual alcohol consumption shrinks blood vessels and reduces blood flow to your skin. This causes early appearances of fine lines and wrinkles.
  4. Sleeping with makeup on: Fatigue might make some person forget to remove the makeup before going to sleep. But, this habit will cause the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and pimples. Use wet wipes to clean makeup before going to sleep every day.
  5. Stress: Stres smajorly impacts not only your mind but also your skin. Lower stress with a hobby, hanging out with your friends, or going on a short vacation.
  6. Lack of sleep: Not getting enough sleep can cause the appearance of wrinkles on your face. Lack of sleep can also cause other skin issues, such as eye bags and dull skin.
